She had given birth just twelve hours earlier. Not in a warm room. Not somewhere safe. But on the cold floor of an ATM booth. People came and went. Machines hummed. Doors opened and closed. And there she was, thin, exhausted, and terrified, curled around eight tiny newborn puppies, trying to protect them with a body that had already given everything it had. When we first saw her, she was hiding her face. Not aggressive. Not defensive. Just small. Ashamed. Vulnerable. It was clear she hadn’t chosen this place. She had chosen survival. The order had already been given to remove her. The space wasn’t meant for animals. But how could anyone look at her and not stop? Her ribs showed. Her eyes were dull with exhaustion.
